Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. has announced labeling changes for Tequin (gatifloxacin) that update the prescription information as a result of continued reports of cases of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia in patients taking the drug.
Tequin is indicated for the treatment of patients with pneumonia, bronchitis, uncomplicated gonorrhea, and various infections including infections of the urinary tract, kidneys, and skin.
The prescribing information has been revised to include a contraindication in diabetic patients. In addition, the warnings and precautions sections have been updated to identify other risk factors for dysglycemia while taking the drug and to include a recommendation for close medical monitoring.
In particular, coadministration of glucose altering medications, older age, and renal insufficiency have been identified as other risk factors. Physicians considering prescribing or dispensing Tequin are encouraged to discuss how patients who may be at risk for hypoglycemia and/or ...
