2004's most sophisticated score was Caroline, or Change. 2005's winner is The Light in the Piazza which not only moves the art form forward, but is also a beautiful recording. Blessed with good voices and an orchestra with a bevy of strings, the songs--at once modern and timeless--both advance the story along and provide emotional resonance.
At the first strumming of the harp, you feel you are entering a musical fantasy--leave reality behind. The beautiful main theme of the (long) overture follows, segueing into "Statues and Stones" in which you expect Rodgers and Hammerstein full-blown melody and lyrics, but are teased with Sondheim rifts. When I heard the words On a Central Square, I was instantly reminded of On a Sunday from Sunday in the Park with George.
