Spelling Bee was the 2005 season's feel-good musical. Politically correct, it reassures us of our human side. In the tradition of Avenue Q, its humor is more cutting-edge than Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. All the major minorities (is that an oxymoron?) are well-represented--blacks, gays, Asians, Jews--did I miss any?
The early songs introduce the contestants and the rules. Eventually, each character gets a chance to reveal their fatal flaw and make us his or her fan. In "I'm Not That Smart," Leaf Coneybear (Less Tyler Ferguson), sings a self-effacing ode to lack of self-confidence.
