ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
RHP Brandon Medders' changaup will be better this season. A pulled back muscle forced him to avoid using his breaking ball and focus on the changeup in his first spring minor league appearance.... OF Jeff DaVanon impressed manager Bob Melvin with his plate discipline and likely will hit leadoff at times.... OF/2B Scott Hairston looked good in left field this spring, which will help him reach the big leagues. The Diamondbacks like Hairston's hitting but were having trouble finding a position for him. MR. APRIL: 1B Conor Jackson showed maturity at the plate this spring. Melvin originally planned to hit Jackson sixth to take pressure off him, but Jackson's impressive spring landed him in the No. 5 spot to start the season. Jackson has power to all fields, a good eye for the strike zone and plenty of confidence after a good spring.--Steve Gilbert

MR. APRIL: RHP Jose Mesa, a setup man, has a history of challenging bitters high in the zone to get strikeouts, but this spring he fine-tuned his slider, cutter and splitter. That could make him a ground-ball pitcher with a lower pitch count.--Thomas Harding
LOS ANGELES DODGERS
The club started the season with 12 pitchers because of concern about the health of RHP Eric Gagne, the closer, who is coming back from the elbow surgery he had last June. Gagne was topping out at about 90 mph with his fast.ball during the last week of exhibition games. RHP Danys Baez will be Gagne's understudy; he was the Devil Rays' closer last season.... LHP Hong-Chih Kuo was one of the best stories of the ...
