LOS ANGELES ANGELS
RHP Brendan Dennelly worked through a sore shoulder and a sore elbow last season but has been free of pain this spring. He has refined his split-finger pitch and found greater command. He'll pitch mostly in middle relief and could be used as a setup man, too.... RHP Francisco Rodriguez has brought the changeup back into his repertoire. He used it through the 2003 season but has thrown exclusively fastballs and sliders the past two seasons. Rodriguez will throw the changeup anywhere in the count.... RHP Jered Weaver had a solid spring. He opened the season in Class AAA and will be the first option if the Angels need to bring up a starting pitcher. MR. APRIL: 1B Casey Ketchman is a good candidate to have a breakout April. He was the club's hottest hitter this spring and will be protected in the lineup in the early going because the club wants to ease the pressure on him. Kotchman will not be concerned about job security because there is no one threatening to take his spot.--Mike Scarr
OAKLAND ATHLETICS
The team likely will rest DH Frank Thomas one out of every three games early in the season. When Thomas sits, Dan Johnson will move from first base to DH, Nick Swisher will move from left field to first and Jay Payton will start in left. Thomas didn't play until the last week of spring training because the team wanted to rest his surgically repaired foot, but he wants to play as much as possible.... LHP Brad Halsey was kept on the opening day roster to give the team an extra starter in case of a rainout during the team's series against the Yankees. OF Bobby Kielty was sent to Class AAA to make room for Halsey. MR. APRIL: 3B Eric Chavez traditionally has been a slow starter, but he likely will break the trend this season. The lineup is as powerful and balanced as it has been since 1B Jason Giambi and SS Miguel Tejada were around. Better support likely will make Chavez, who has hit at least 26 home runs in six straight seasons, less inclined to chase pitches out of the strike zone.--Mychael Urban
