Major leaguers are booed and prospects are dogged for striking out too often---even Little Leaguers are lectured for failing to make contact. Why? Though more embarrassing than a lineout to third, are strikeouts any worse? Not necessarily.
* Consider: Babe Ruth, Hack Wilson, Jimmie Foxx, Larry Doby, Duke Snider, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Dale Murphy, Jim Thome and Adam Dunn have led their leagues in strikeouts multiple times. Schmidt, Foxx and Ruth led their leagues in strikeouts and on-base percentage in the same season.
* In 2005, the major league strikeout leaders read like a who's who of baseball: Dunn, Jason Bay, Alex Rodriguez, Bobby Abreu, Miguel Cabrera, David Ortiz and Grady Sizemore all finished in the top 20.
