Motocrossers who love the dunes had a right to whine. Although there are several dune areas in the West (Sand Lake, Oregon Dunes, Pismo, Dumont Dunes and Glamis), you had to truck down into Baja to race a dune motocross. Racers would sit around and ask each other, "Why doesn't someone organize something like that in the States?"

That's what Rich Reyes from the Central Coast Motorcycle Association asked himself, and all it took was a phone call to the chief ranger at California's Oceano Dunes (more commonly called Pismo) to get it happening. Making the event even more important for everyone, it would be a benefit for spinal cord research and the Clayton Memorial Foundation which supports injured racers.
