The notoriously reticent artist John Singer Sargent once said of conservative women. "I don't like them. They are too like your well-to-do, respectable, middle-class women going to church on a Sunday afternoon." (1) Sargent's partiality for women of less conformist dispositions corresponded to what critics recognized as the inventiveness of his art: "Sargent," the novelist and journalist Harold Frederic (1856-1898), wrote in a review, "does not know how to be commonplace or conventional." (2)
