The first Van Gogh to enter a British public collection was one of three versions of A Wheatfield with Cypresses (see above), painted in 1889. It changed hands twice before Samuel Courtauld paid [pounds sterling]3,300 for it to enter the Tate's collection. (It is now in the collection of the National Gallery, London.) By 1939 about ninety Van Goghs had been acquired by British collectors. These included politicians, businessmen, artists, dealers, and stockbrokers.
