World junior 10,000m champion Boniface Kiprop was crowned the 2004 national athlete of the year at a ceremony organised by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) last Friday at Lugogo.
Kiprop beat track queen Dorcus Inzikuru and Ndejje University's Wilson Kipkemei to the award, the first of its kind organised by UAF.
He set a new national 5,000m record of 13:05.47secs in Berlin, Germany and clocked 27:04.00secs in an IAAF Grand Prix race in Brussels.
His fourth place finish at the Athens Olympic Games made him one of the best Ugandan performers in Greece.
