A move to resettle refugee families from war-ravaged areas of the world in Exeter as part of a United Nations programme has been blocked by the Home Office.
Around 60 refugees - ten families with children - were due to begin a new life in the Devon city from early next year.
However, Devon County Council says it has been told by the Home Office that it is not going ahead with the scheme.
The local authority says Whitehall officials have made it clear that this is because the resettlement programme does not have the support of Exeter City Council.
