For years, Nye County residents have argued and anguished over plans to draw an east-west line somewhere near Beatty and split their county in two.
Sometimes the call to divide Nye is shouted in anger by Pahrump residents who think tiny Tonopah has no business being the county seat. Sometimes the idea is muttered under the breaths of Tonopah residents who fear Pahrump is tugging the county away from its rural roots.
Now Assemblyman Rod Sherer, R-Pahrump, wants to settle the debate once and for all.
Sherer has submitted a bill draft request that seeks a state-funded study of several scenarios for dividing the county.
The plan most commonly suggested would fold the northern part of the county into neighboring Esmeralda County and leave the southern part with the Nye County name and Pahrump as its governmental seat.
Sherer insists he's not pushing the idea and doesn't really think it will work, but he wants it studied to clear the air about whether it is feasible.
