03 DECEMBER 2004 MAJURO (Pacnews) --- Marshall Islands President Kessai Note will travel to Taiwan next week on a trip expected to pave the way for a return visit by Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian.

The regional tour is expected to rile Beijing, which maintains there is only one China and views Taiwan as part of its territory despite their split in 1949 at the end of a civil war. "We want the Taiwanese president to visit. It's a matter of when his schedule allows it," said Marshall Islands Foreign Minister Gerald Zackios, who is accompanying Note to Taiwan.
