Children turned copper into gold and powered light bulbs with lemons at a university drive to attract more future science students.

The University of Nottingham hosted the Schools Science Fair yesterday with the aim of inspiring more pupils to study the subject.

Fewer teenagers are choosing to study chemistry, physics or biology at A-level and at university.

And in Nottingham, pupils' science results still lag behind those nationally, with just over half of 14-year-olds reaching the Government benchmark in the subject in recent Key Stage 3 exams.
