IT was in connection with the future of insurance that a friend in the computer industry who works for companies in this field sent me the latest edition of Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox, an on-line e-zine which examines the role that well-designed software can play in the lives of people.

Nielsen argues that the internet is a harbinger of large changes to our way of life.

Indeed, he says it is an agent of decentralisation and de-industrialisation, by which he means the patterns of life set up during the 200 year-long reign of the industrial revolution will over time be undercut by the influence of computerisation.

Mass production and centralised manufacturing have emerged in the industrial age giving rise to big companies and economies of scale. Employment and jobs have become the predominant way to make a living.
