Ukraine revote moves

SOME form of new election in Ukraine appeared increasingly likely as a solution to political deadlock and mass unrest after a presidential poll the opposition insists was rigged. Even Russia, backer of official election winner Viktor Yanukovich, seemed to come round to the idea of a fresh vote.

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder said they would respect the outcome of any new poll, according to a German government statement.

MORE than 300 people died after flash floods and landslides devastated three coastal towns and left swathes of the northern Philippines under water.

The death toll was expected to rise as rescuers were unable to reach areas cut off by huge mudslides and fast-moving floodwater in the wake of tropical depression Winnie and as the country braced for another powerful storm.

A CAR bomb in a crowded market north of Baghdad killed at least seven civilians and wounded 18 as a US military patrol passed by. As well as daily attacks on Iraqi security forces and civilians, November has been one of the deadliest months for US troops, with 134 killed. The US military expects violence to escalate before elections scheduled for January 30.
