FOR John A Witte Jr, knowing what he wanted to do at an early age opened the door to an unusual education where he 'learnt how to learn' which, in turn, came in handy when he joined Donjon.

The second Witte offspring says he knew from the beginning that he wanted to join his father in the maritime business. International travel and the opportunity to meet different types of people were the inspiration behind this choice.

So he went and got degrees in political science and religious studies subjects, he is not ashamed to admit, that have no maritime overtones from Hobart College in upstate New York. He joined Donjon in 1982.

Over the years, this choice has brought him his fill of unusual experiences. He remembers a case in the early 1980s when a coastal freighter, the Mercedes, fell prey to a freak Thanksgiving Day storm in Florida and smashed into a kindly lady's swimming pool as it washed up on shore. The famous Kennedy clan lived next door.
