Lloyd's List's Greek Shipping Awards 2004 were decided by a broad-based independent panel of judges comprising leading Greek shipping personalities and experts in the industry.
The newspaper and event organisers have expressed their gratitude to the first panel which met to determine the recipients of the awards shortly after the closing date for nominations.
The 10-member panel comprised in alphabetical order: Dinos Caroussis, vice chairman of the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee in London; Nicos Efthymiou, president of the Union of Greek Shipowners; Markos Foros, chairman of the Propeller Club, International Port of Piraeus; George Gratsos, president of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping; author Gelina Harlafti of the Ionian University; Dimitris Mitsatsos, director general of Helmepa; Marianna Moschou, formerly of Citibank and now president of Aegean Baltic Bank; Captain Nick Pentheroudakis, president of the Hellenic Shipbrokers Association; and Harilaos Psaraftis, professor of marine systems at the National Technical University of Athens. These were joined by Nigel Lowry, Athens correspondent for Lloyd's List.
Prof. Psaraftis was elected by the panel as its chairman on adjudication day and gave a report on the procedure to guests at the Awards dinner last Thursday night.
'Don't shoot me, I was only the chairman!,' quipped Prof. Psaraftis, who said he thought the judging process was 'very democratic and went extremely well'.
