MANILA, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - Philippine Vice President Noli +Kabayan, De Castro called for political will to stop illegal logging, which he says, is the culprit behind the deadly flashfloods and landslides in the countryside.
During his visit to Nueva Ecija Tuesday to inspect the damage brought by typhoon 'Winnie', De Castro lamented the nation hasn't learned from the Ormoc tragedy.
It can be recalled that hundreds died in Ormoc, Southern Leyte, when flashfloods and landslides hit the town in November 1991. Officials determined that illegal logging caused the incident.
De Castro met with Nueva Ecija Governor Tomas Joson III and Quezon Province, first district Representative Rafael Nantes who both confirmed illegal logging as the cause of the flashfloods in their provinces.
As of today, more than 100 persons from Quezon Province and Cabanatuan City were reportedly killed by flashfloods caused by typhoon 'Winnie'.
