CANBERRA, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - Papua New Guinea (PNG) must seriously address problems of poor governance and law and order if its economic outlook is to improve, a new report says.
A study of PNG by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Economic Analytical Unit said after years of shrinking the nation's economy was finally showing signs of improvement.
"(But) Papua New Guinea's development continues to be challenged by poor governance, lawlessness and weak institutions," the report said.
"The road ahead for Papua New Guinea requires a broad-based approach to growth, one that maximises the use of the country's core economic assets and creates an enabling environment for the private sector to flourish and take primacy.
"All these are possible only to the extent that issues of governance and law and order are seriously addressed."
