WASHINGTON, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Mei-yueh is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C. Dec. 8 to attend an international seminar and meet with U.S. trade and economics officials, business sources said Monday.
Ho will attend a seminar to be organized by the Institute for International Economics, a noted U.S. think tank, and deliver a speech to American business executives at the invitation of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council which groups U.S. companies with interests in Taiwan.
This will be Ho's first visit to the U.S. capital since she assumed her current post in May this year. During her stay, Ho is also expected to meet with Bush administration officials from the U.S. Trade Representative Office and the Department of Commerce, the sources said.
Because of Beijing's diplomatic embargo against Taiwan, few Taiwan ministers have been able to visit Washington, D.C. The Taiwan representative office in the United States has remained low-key concerning Ho's upcoming visit.
In a telephone interview with the CNA's Washington office Monday, Ho confirmed reports about her forthcoming U.S. visit. Nevertheless, she said her itinerary is still in the works.
