TAIPEI, Dec 1 Asia Pulse - Mainland China is stepping up its efforts to marginalize Taiwan by signing multilateral or bilateral free trade agreements with other countries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesman Michel Lu said Tuesday.

Lu was commenting on Beijing's signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Vientiane, Laos, the previous day.

"The new accord marks yet another move by Beijing to use economic means to marginalize Taiwan, " Lu said, adding that relevant government agencies will communicate with ASEAN countries through the proper channels and work out response strategies to cope with the new situation.
