SUN Cellular of Gokongwei-owned Digitel Mobile Philippines Inc. is targeting to grow its subscribers to two million by the end of 2005 from about 1.2 million by year's end, the company's top official said.
Digitel president Lance Gokongwei said the company would spend $100 million in the coming year to expand the coverage of Sun Cellular.
He said the company wanted to become the "Walmart" of the local telecom industry that could offer the best deals to subscribers.
The 19-month-old third player is cashing in on its late-mover advantage, which Gokongwei said allowed it to put up the infrastructure at a much lower cost.
He insisted the company had not been talking with any foreign investor even as stock market players continued to speculate that the listed parent firm Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. could be in loose talks with Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecommunications.
