IN SORSOGON, the pili tree is known as the "majestic tree" due to its many uses.
More than just a source of nuts made into food and candies that have become famous souvenir items from the province, it is also a source of raw materials to produce plaster and ointment in pharmacy, adhesives, printing inks and even paints and varnishes.
To emphasize the importance of pili to the Sorsoganons, in particular, and the Bicolanos, in general, a Pili Festival is even held in Sorsogon City every June-with this year's celebration highlighted by a pili nut-cracking activity participated by thousands of Sorsoganons and held along the 25-kilometer city stretch.
But it took a native of Zambales to produce organic pili oil, which is said to have health benefits.
