PHILIPPINE Airlines yesterday said it was expecting the arrival today of a newly leased Airbus 320, one of several 156-seater planes PAL would use to start upgrading its domestic fleet.
PAL president Jaime Bautista said the flag carrier proceeded with an "interim refleeting program" while it was still deciding whether to tap Airbus or Boeing planes for its 10-aircraft modernization program.
He said the flag carrier aimed to upgrade at least 10 of its 13 aircraft servicing domestic routes. PAL has a fleet of 30 airplanes for its local and overseas flights.
A refleeting, according to Bautista, would boost the airline's efficiency so it could improve its service to customers. The use of newer planes would allow a faster turnaround time, which was essential in improving PAL's on-time performance, he pointed out.
The lease agreement with a well-known foreign leasing company to cover the interim re-fleeting would not be on a long-term basis, according to the PAL president.
