AGRICULTURE Secretary Arthur Yap and his counterparts from Iran, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States yesterday have agreed in principle to set up an agriculture technology exchange to ensure food security and political stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
The agriculture heads of the five countries reached the agreement during a meeting with other Asia-Pacific leaders attending the International Rice Forum held at the Philippine Trade and Training Center.
The Philippines hopes that by 2007, more than one million hectares would be allotted to hybrid rice.
The officials expect a yield of six million metric tons of unmilled rice at an estimated seed budget of P1.2 billion.
For this crop year, the DA is looking at 200,500 hectares of hybrid riceland, Yap said. The riceland will be expanded to 250,000 hectares in the May-October season next year, and 350,000 hectares by April 2006.
