CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-Ten Philippine Army soldiers were killed while six others were wounded in an encounter Tuesday with New People's Army rebels in San Rafael, Bulacan, the public information chief of the Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command reported.
The soldiers belonged to the 56th Infantry Battalion, Lt. Col. Preme Monta, speaking to the Inquirer by phone from Nolcom at Camp Aquino, Tarlac City, said.
This was the first known clash with communist rebels this year where the military in Central and Northern Luzon suffered a high death toll.
Monta said the soldiers' platoon, comprised of 19 troopers led by Lt. Ben Puyao, broke off from a relief distribution mission in the wake of Tropical Depression Winnie to check reports on the presence of NPA rebels in Barangay Pasong Bakal, also in San Rafael.
