VICTORIA, Oriental Mindoro-Residents of this province held a rally to protest the operations of a nickel mining company that the protesters said was environmentally destructive.
At least 5,000 residents gathered to demand a stop to the operations of the Aglubang-Mining Crew Minerals (Aglubang-Crew).
Last March, the Office of the President overturned a 2001 decision of former Environment Secretary Heherson Alvarez revoking the mineral profit sharing agreement given to Aglubang-Crew.
Aglubang-Crew plans to mine nickel in 9,720 hectares in Villa Cerveza, Victoria town and Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.
Alvarez, however, canceled its MPSA on July 16, 2001 because of the "great damage it would bring to Mindoro island" and its social unacceptability.
