MALL goers in Manila may soon have to stop and stand in attention for the national anthem.
As part of his nationalism campaign launched on the 141st birth anniversary of working class hero Andres Bonifacio yesterday, Manila Mayor Lito Atienza issued an executive order requiring all malls in Manila to play the national anthem once they open, and again on closing time, every business day.
"The order takes effect immediately, and if the owners don't comply, the harshest punishment they might get is to have a sour relationship with City Hall," Atienza told the Inquirer.
The mayor has signed the order with the promise of permanently implementing it by way of a local law. Atienza added that he signed the executive order immediately to allow malls to prepare for its implementation.
He said that malls, which usually open at 10 a.m. and close at 8 or 9 p.m., would also have to display the Philippine flag inside their establishments, like other business firms-big or small-in the city.
