FORMER hostage Angelito Nayan will be reporting for work today at the Department of Foreign Affairs six days after his return to the country from almost a month in captivity in the hands of a shadowy Muslim group in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Yesterday also marked the end of the six-month official leave Nayan took from the DFA in order to go to Afghanistan to help the United Nations conduct the elections there.
Nayan's return to work will be without any fanfare, however, and without any assurance that he would be getting his old job back in the Office of American Affairs (OAA).
Even so, the 34-year-old diplomat opted to face the press on his first day at work. After merely reading a short statement on his arrival in Manila on Thursday night and skirting media interviews since then, Nayan asked for a press conference at 2 p.m. today, DFA officials said.
"His leave ends today, so he's back to work," said DFA spokesperson Gilberto Asuque yesterday, noting that Nayan had not asked for an extension of his leave. "That's why he's having his press conference tomorrow [today]."
