BACOLOD CITY-The Regional Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health in Western Visayas yesterday declared a cholera alert situation in Negros Occidental and placed this city on "hot spot status" in the wake of the rising number of cases of the water-and-food-borne disease in the province.
Dr. Jessie Glenn Alonsabe, the regional epidemiologist, said investigators confirmed 27 cases of cholera in Bacolod and four cases in Negros Occidental, and two deaths.
"This is not an outbreak situation, we are putting up a warning to prevent it," Alonsabe clarified.
Provincial Health Officer Luisa Efren yesterday said from Sept. 1 to Nov. 20, they have recorded 84 suspected cholera cases, including the confirmed cholera cases in Bacolod and one case each in the cities of Kabankalan and Victorias and Bago and in the town of Murcia.
The Institute of Tropical Medicine was still validating the other suspected cholera cases, she said.
