Vientiane, Nov 30 NZPA - New Zealand is looking to sign a non-aggression pact with the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean), a treaty that Australia has shunned as pointless.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard caused a diplomatic row ahead of his and New Zealand counterpart Helen Clark's arrival in Laos for the historic summit with the 10-nation bloc by dismissing Asean's request that the two countries sign a Treaty of Amity and Co-operation (TAC).
New Zealand and Australia agreed to launch trade talks with Asean at the meeting tonight, but unlike Australia, New Zealand said it would also sign the treaty.
Miss Clark said besides trade, Asean had ``clear aims'' for security, and political, social and cultural progress.
``In this context, I advised the Asean leaders that New Zealand is studying with positive intent, possible accession to the 1976 treaty,'' Miss Clark said.
