The number of cases of sexually-transmitted diseases are soaring in Scotland.
Figures released by the Scottish Executive yesterday for 2001-02 show a dramatic rise of 39% in chlamydia cases, to 4,867, and an investigation by the Press and Journal discovered a further 16% rise in just the second quarter of this year.
In August, the Scottish Centre for Infection and Environmental Health published data from the first two quarters of 2004 showing steady increases in chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes and syphilis.
