Kobe Bryant rises out of his seat on the Lakers' bench, thumps his chest and exhorts his teammates. They need exhorting. What had been a 33-point lead over the Hornets has shrunk to seven, and Bryant, who has fouled out, can do nothing but lead cheers.
Though his sideline enthusiasm is commendable as the Lakers hang on for the victory, rooting on teammates probably isn't the best use of Bryant's talent. These hands weren't made for clapping; they were made for dominating the basketball. And with Shaquille O'Neal finally out of his way, Bryant can have the ball all he wants. He is, as a Western Conference assistant says, the Lakers' "first, second and third options."
