To educate one's self is selfish, but in the best possible way. Knowledge always means power, but power left untapped is little more than cocktail party chatter.
Education is not enough
Having an education brings two responsibilities. First, to forever be unsatisfied with what we've already learned. Second, to give away what we've taken in by educating others. Failure at either of these life tasks is to be selfish in the worst possible way.
The Fulbright Scholar Program was designed to help meet those two responsibilities. It allows people to stretch their capabilities while educating others. With a mission to promote "mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries of the world," the international exchange program was envisioned by Senator J. William Fulbright more than 50 years ago.
By providing grants to lecture, conduct research or do both in 140 countries worldwide, the program invites scholars to expand themselves, their perspectives and their own education by educating others.
While grants in the traditional Fulbright Scholar Program range from three to 10 months or longer, the new Senior Specialists Program offers grants for two to six weeks. It enables those who otherwise could not participate to make a real difference in less time.
