After 136 years of being the Grand Old Dame in educating women, Wells College NY will admit men in 2005, announced Board of Trustees President Stephen L. Zabriskie. The decision came after months of study and three days of trustee discussion on campus.
Leaders of the 397-student college said the move is necessary due to low enrollment and financial concerns. More than 100 students walked out of the meeting when the decision came, many in tears. About 170 students then occupied the administration building for days to protest the decision, and later more than a dozen pitched tents on the lawn in front of it.
