As a federal penitentiary from 1934-1963, Alcatraz was known as "The Rock." During the prison's 29 years of operation, there were over 14 attempted escapes from the maximum-security prison. It is believed that no one ever succeeded in escaping from The Rock, although five prisoners were listed as missing and presumed drowned. The waters are not only very cold, but the currents are treacherous and sharks sometimes enter the bay.
This does not exactly sound like the type of environment into which a nine-year-old boy would want to venture, but Johnny Wilson, from Hillsborough, California, recently did just that.
