Even before the September controversy surrounding the false claims by CBS News on George W. Bush's National Guard service, media credibility was in a free fall. In 1972, 68 percent of those surveyed by Gallup said they had a great deal or a fair amount of trust in the media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. In 2004, 44 percent gave that response. Regular viewership of the ABC, CBS, and NBC nightly newscasts was down, too. Of those familiar with the CBS report on Bush's service, 43 percent said the network made an honest mistake. Forty percent thought CBS was deliberately trying to mislead the public.
