When the House of Representatives recently put together legislation to reshape U.S. intelligence, it included a provision to make it harder for illegal aliens to get driver's licenses, to allow easier deportation of illegals, and to limit the acceptance of cards given out by foreign consulates as IDs for American security checks. Basic, commonsense no-brainers, right? Not for some politicians. As this is written, senators are pressuring Republicans in the House to remove those provisions--with strong backing from the White House.

Why would President Bush resist immigration enforcement measures like these that will obviously help protect Americans? One is hard pressed to come up with a reason other than his infamous and oft-demonstrated willingness to do anything for the Hispanic vote. Arguments about "not tacking unrelated legislation onto intelligence reform" fall flat: Tighter immigration controls were part of the 9/11 Commission recommendations, and ...
