George W. Bush has been criticized for consoling the families of fallen American soldiers privately, instead of publicly. In our judgment, meeting with families outside the media glare and refusing to exploit such occasions to portray himself as "the President who feels your pain" is the more decent choice. By all accounts, Bush uses these opportunities to extend real sympathy and support, without political overtones.
