More than 100,000 child soldiers have been used in large-scale conflicts in parts of Africa.

In the Great Lakes Region, except in Kenya and Tanzania, child soldiers have been used by governments and rebel groups in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A report by the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers says that child recruitment, often forcible, escalated as peace process in the DRC and Sudan were in their final stages as the signatories to peace agreements sought to enhance their negotiating positions by building up their might.
