I WOULD LIKE to pay tribute to Alex Miller's novel, Journey to the Stone Country, which won the Miles Franklin in 2003. I began it as part of a duty-read and by the time I came to its end recognised that here was a masterpiece. The novel's art lies in the quietness of its telling, in the trust with which it allows the unspoken to be apprehended beside the spoken, like resonation outside the ear's register or the gravitational hold of dark matter on illumined bodies.
