SIR: It was surprising to see a reviewer in Quadrant (September 2004) taking seriously the central premise of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. That premise--that there has existed since 1099 a secret society dedicated to keeping alive the fact that Jesus was a mere mortal who married Mary Magdalene and had noble descendants--is bunkum worthy of Erich von Daniken.
The document archly referred to by Dan Brown as being in the possession of the Bibliotheque Nationale, suggesting that such a society exists, and setting out its famous members, is a silly forgery planted by a French con man named Pierre Plantard. It is not taken seriously by the Bibliotheque Nationale or by any scholar.
But in any event, a very little common sense and general knowledge is all that is needed to debunk the "Priory of Sion". The ...
