(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
I THINK I created a giant out of the Center for Pop Music Philippines Inc. without intending to," says Butch Albarracin, founder and president of the country's first and largest training school in pop singing.
Now on its 20th year, the Center for Pop Music Philippines has produced many of today's singers who started in the training as unknown individuals. Among them are Sarah Geronimo, Erik Santos, Rachelle Ann Go, Sandara Park, Frenchy Dy, Nina, Nyoy Volante, Jimmy Bondoc, King, Josh Santana, Nikki Valdez, Roxanne Barcelo, Roselle Nava, Dessa, Geneva Cruz, four Kims of "Miss Saigon." The list is long.
"I prefer training unknown singers like these singers used to be because I feel fulfilled every time I see them succeed," says Albarracin. "When I watch a reality TV competition, I always get a strong feeling that my student would win. And they win, most of the time."
The Center for Pop Music Philippines was established in 1984, with perfect timing. It came at the height of the popularity of the karaoke, the minus-one and the sing-along bars.
"I saw the need of these singing hopefuls and converted our house into a studio," Albarracin recalls. "Para kang nasa Raon. Ilang hakbang lang, sa kabilang studio, iba ang kinakanta. Talagang ang ingay sa bahay namin. Hanggang ngayon."
