SAN FRANCISCO -- People with clinical depression have a more than 50% greater risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death than those who are not depressed, according to a study reported by Dr. Jean-Philippe Empana at a conference on cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention sponsored by the American Heart Association.
The case-control study involved 2,040 patients with clinical depression and 3,080 matched controls, all patients in an HMO in western Washington state, said Dr. Empana of the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM), Villejuif, France. Twelve percent of the patients with clinical depression versus 6% of the control patients experienced sudden cardiac death between 1980 and 1994.
