Drug companies are offering a new tool to make it easier for low-income patients to get free medications.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) recently added a new feature to its www.helpingpatients.org Web site, which allows low-income patients--or their physicians or caregivers--to streamline the process of applying to pharmaceutical company programs that offer free or discounted drugs.

Instead of filling out forms for each individual program that the patient may be eligible for, the new tool allows them to enter their information once and have it matched to the appropriate programs.

The new tool offers access to more than 400 brand name medications through 40 patient assistance programs sponsored by large pharmaceutical manufacturers, according to PhRMA Deputy Vice President Mark Grayson.

Patients can use the "fast access" tool to fill out the applications and then print them out to be signed by their physician. Or, doctors can handle the ...
