Medicine is, and has always been, a charitable profession--not only in a financial sense, but in a personal and spiritual sense.

The failure of policy makers to recognize that charity is both part of the nature and part of the motivation for the majority of persons whose careers involve providing care to others, at least up until the last couple of decades, has resulted in tragic disappointment and loss for patients and caregivers alike--most of it unnecessary and avoidable.
