Why do people feel so strongly--positively or negatively--about Barry Bonds? Is it because for so long he was perceived as a bad guy and now the media people he wronged are trying to get back at him? Is it because he's chasing a record that might be the biggest in sports and some people believe he might have cheated along the way? Is it because he's a black man? Is it because we, as fans, feel cheated now that all this steroids stuff has come out--because before then we called him the greatest hitter who ever lived without batting an eyelash?
How do you feel?
The easy answer is "angry--Bonds is a cheater and a fraud, and that's that." There are timelines in the new books on him, so finally some stat nerd can quantify how many homers Bonds hit while under the cloud of alleged steroids use.
If Bonds were not pursuing a home run record, he'd be just another player suspected of using 'roids. But he has Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron in his sights. I think most baseball fans feel they need to take up for the ghosts of the past and say the playing field isn't level these days, that Bonds is hitting home runs ...
