National Institutes of Health Director Elias Zerhouni, MD, said May 12 that he plans to bar NIH scientists from accepting stock or stock options as compensation for outside consulting.
Testifying at a congressional hearing, Zerhouni also said he would bar employees with authority over grants from accepting such outside work at all. These restrictions were among recommendations of a "Blue Ribbon" panel appointed by Zerhouni in response to December articles in the Los Angeles Times describing extensive financial links between senior NIH officials and industry.
