TAIPEI, April 3 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's government has played a core role in the island's transition from a poor agricultural society into one of the world's leading producers of information and communication technology (ICT) products, according to an article co-written by two World Economic Forum (WEF) economists.
WEF global competitiveness program adviser Arthur Lyon Dahl and program director August Lopez-Claros, who authored the article "The Impact of Information and Communication Technologies on the Economic Competitiveness and Social Development of Taiwan, "attributed Taiwan's exceptional technological strength to a comprehensive planning mechanism the government established to consolidate resources in various sectors, such as the economy and science.
The article coincides with the WEF's release March 28 of its Global Information Technology Report 2005-2006, which placed Taiwan seventh in the world in terms of the networked readiness index (NRI). Taiwan ranked 15th last year.
The NRI measures the degree of a nation or community to participate in and benefit from ICT developments.
